Aspendale pips Clayton in Football Challenge

The inaugural Staff Association Challenge Cup has been won by Aspendale, who beat Clayton in a close fought game amid challenging weather conditions.

Those that braved the strong winds buffeting Monash University Oval were treated to a keen contest between the two rivals.

Clayton CMIS took advantage of the conditions to hold a 2-1 lead at oranges.

However with the wind at their backs, the Aspendale team fought back, scoring two second half goals.

A controversial offside decision by linesman – and Aspendale scientist – Michael Borgas denied Clayton CMIS an opportunity to equalise, close to full time.

The match finished 3-2, with Aspendale getting the chocolates.

Referee Sam Popovski commented that the game was played in good spirits with a competitive edge as teams overcame the difficult weather.

“I’m sure both teams are looking forward to a re-match and for the Staff Association to involve other CSIRO sites in Victoria to see who are the next Victorian Champions,” Mr Popovski said.
